| HHe was born at Sandwich, Kent on the 29th of August 1911 the son of John Royle Linell, brewery manager, and Marian (nee Watson) of 54, Strand Street, Sandwich, Kent, later of 3, St John's Lane, Canterbury, and of Norton on Tees, County Durham. He was educated at the Junior King's School from September 1920 and at the King?s School Canterbury to July 1928. On leaving school joined the staff of the National Provincial Bank in July 1928 as a probationer at their Barnard Castle Branch. He was promoted to junior clerk in October 1928 and transferred to the York branch in 1929 and was promoted to clerk in 1930. He moved to the Hull branch in 1931 and to the City of London office in 1936 when he lived at 119, South Croxted Road, Norwood. He represented the bank as a member of its first rugby and cricket teams. The bank record that his colleagues: - ?Remembered his friendliness, ability, and ?sterling? character, and he was very popular among colleagues and customers alike.? He enlisted in the Territorial Army as Sapper in the Royal Engineers and was mobilised on the outbreak of er. He was posted for training to the Honourable Artillery Company, 121st Officer Cadet Training Unit from where he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery on the 18th of May 1940. He was promoted to Lieutenant on the 18th of November 1941. He was promoted to Captain in 1943 and was attached to the Indian Army Service Corps. He was mortally wounded during the advance into Burma to capture Mandalay and Meiktila. He was mentioned in despatches ?In recognition of gallant and distinguished service in for his service in Burma and on the Eastern Frontier of India?, which was announced by the War Office on the 5th of April 1945. He is commemorated on the war memorial at West Hartlepool and on the Nat West PLC memorial. The spelling of his name on the memorial is incorrect. |
